Georges Mathieu

Biography

Georges Mathieu, born January 27, 1921 in Boulogne-sur-Mer, France, is a painter and contemporary art theorist. He is considered one of the leading figures of lyrical abstraction, an artistic movement that emerged in the 1950s.

After studying literature and a career as a teacher, he turned to art as a self-taught artist in 1942. After the war, Georges became fully committed to non-figurative painting. His abstract, dynamic works captivated audiences and attracted a great deal of attention.

In 1946, he founded L'Imaginaire art group with Wols, Jean-Michel Atlan, Hartung, Bryen and Riopelle. The group later expanded to include Michel Tapié, Picabia and François Stahly to form H.W.P.S.M.T.B.

Mathieu became known for his "gestural painting" technique, in which he uses rapid, impulsive movements to apply paint to canvas. His works are characterized by vivid colors, swirling abstract forms and expressive energy, providing a genuine alternative to the geometric abstraction prevalent at the time.

Georges Mathieu also likens painting to performance art, or "happening": he sometimes creates his work live in front of an audience. During these performances, the artist reveals his creative process, exposing himself to the public in his creative act.

Over the years, Mathieu has become a leading figure in contemporary art. He has exhibited his work all over the world, receiving praise from critics and art collectors alike. His unique, bold style has influenced many artists and helped redefine the boundaries of abstract painting.

In addition to his artistic work, Georges Mathieu was also a prolific writer and renowned lecturer. He wrote several books on art and aesthetics, and his ideas on the role of the artist in society provoked much debate. He was also a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts of the Institut de France from 1975.

Georges Mathieu died on June 10, 2012 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the art world. His work continues to be exhibited and celebrated, recalling his exceptional talent and unique contribution to lyrical abstraction.
