Ernest Montaut (1878 - 1909)
Biography
French artist born in Montauban in 1878, Ernest Montaut is a painter, illustrator, and poster artist.
Despite a short career (he died of appendicitis at the age of 31), Ernest Montaut produced posters advertising the merits of the mechanical prowess of the automotive and aeronautical industries, first in France and then in Europe.
His works are characterized by striking effects of speed associated with pastel tones also made possible for his lithographic prints thanks to a technique based on stencil, developed in collaboration with his Parisian printer Mabileau & Cie.
Ernest's artistic adventure is inseparable from his wife, Marguerite Millet (1883-1949) known as Gamy, who will continue to produce works in the same line after the death of her husband.
Axel Rondouin is preparing the catalog raisonné of the works of Ernest and Marguerite Montaut. Please contact the gallery to have a work included in the book, which is scheduled for release in the spring of 2023.
